SCOPE OF WORK
This project involved the transformation of a traditional miners cottage into a contemporary family home, seamlessly blending heritage charm with modern functionality. The original layout featured segmented rooms, typical of its era. Our design focused on maintaining key traditional elements, including the original timber floors, wainscoting and picture rails, while introducing an open floor plan that enhances connectivity and light.
To achieve this, we incorporated square set ceilings and strategically placed windows, glass doors and skylights, bringing natural light into the heart of the home. The kitchen and laundry areas featured the existing concrete slab, which was ground down to match the height of the timber floors. This surface was then topped with micro-cement and polished, offering a smooth and durable aesthetic.
The bathroom was designed as a luxurious space, showcasing floor-to-ceiling mosaic tiles and large format floor tiles. A custom blackbutt timber vanity adds warmth, complemented by two generous skylights that elevate the space.
Despite the vision, we faced challenges due to the property's age, necessitating significant structural repairs to the footings and subfloor. This project not only revitalises the cottage but also honours its history, creating a harmonious balance between past and present for our clients.
